Thurrock Male Voice Choir was founded on 8 May 1938 by Arthur Jones. He started with 16 choir members and was a great choir master. The first concert given by Thurrock Male Voice Choir was on 19 October 1938. Admission was 1 shilling and 3 pence (6.25 p today!).

During the Second World War around 20 concerts were given at gun-sites, hospitals and for other organisations supporting the war effort. After the war choir life settled into a routine of providing concerts for various charities, mostly, but not always, local to Thurrock. By 1951 over £840 had been raised for charities.

In the mid-fifties over 70 broadcasts of the choir were made by the BBC. Many competitions were entered, mostly successfully. The choir were twice winners, in 1959 and 1960, of the London semi-national Eisteddfod. Around this time the choir performed on “Friday Night Is Music Night” and also won a BBC Let the People Sing contest.

The type of music that the choir performs now has changed with the musical environment. Audiences these days would find earlier programmes hard to sit through so our Musical Director, Linda Wade puts together a variety of songs which are well known and have the audience humming the tunes as they go home.
